6 Tips to Apply Your Blush for a Perfect Glow

Of all the makeup products out there, blush can be one of the most confusing.

In fact, many women skip it altogether, worried that they’ll apply it wrong. Yet, it’s also one of the most important tools in your makeup arsenal.

Applied correctly, blush gives your skin an eternally youthful glow and makes your complexion look healthier and more vibrant.

That’s why we’ve put together six tips that will not only help you find your perfect color, but ensure the blush you sweep on lasts, is flattering, and gives you that beautiful, healthy breath of color you want.

#1 – Cleanse & Moisturize

The first step to gorgeous makeup is to start with a clean palette. Cleansing and moisturizing your face allows your skin to feel supple and your blush to blend more easily and last longer.

For gentle cleansing and deep down moisture that helps you show your best face to the world, we recommend our Chamomile Face Wash and Hydrate Mango Face Cream.

#2 – Prep Your Face

For long-lasting blush, the next step is to prep your face with a makeup primer, like our Camera Ready Face Primer. The silicone-based primer provides a natural makeup base and a matte finish, while minimizing fine lines and wrinkles and perfecting your skin.

This no-slip canvas is exactly what you need to create a flawless complexion to show off your glow.

#3 – Even Your Tone

Next, be sure to smooth out your skin tone, cover up redness, and give your blush something to stick to, by using a tinted moisturizer or foundation.

Our Hi-Def Foundation provides the ultimate in coverage along with a dewy finish to make your skin look more youthful, and is enhanced with collagen to reduce any puffiness. Or, for sheer, radiant coverage and additional hydration, try our BB Cream.

#4 – Pick the Right Shade for Your Skin

Now, for the fun stuff…

Choosing the right shade to flatter your skin tone.

It’s important to realize that not all blush colors will work for you. In fact, if you go with a shade that’s too light or too dark, it can actually age you rather than giving you that gorgeous, luminous glow you were going for.

So, what’s the trick?

Simply look in the mirror and lightly pinch your cheeks. The color of your natural flush is what you should be looking for in a blush.

However, if it’s still a challenge, here are a few suggestions that can help based on your skin tone…

If your skin is very fair or pale, a light is the way to go. Our Nude, Entice, or High Five Blushers can give you a sheer wash of color without overpowering your skin tone.

For skin that is light to medium, a peachy-pink like our Drizzle provides a pretty flush of color and is universally flattering.

Golden and olive skin tones look gorgeous in brighter, more radiant pinks, like Unsung.

And, for darker skin tones, try Curvy for a warm undertone and an ethereal glow.

#5 – Pick the Right Brush

It’s also important to invest in a quality blush brush.

You want one that’s soft and easy to maneuver so that you can diffuse the blush across your cheek, without overloading the color. Try one made with natural or vegan hair that is dense, but not too tightly packed.

#6 – Apply and Blend

Once you’re ready to apply, swirl your brush into your blusher and then tap off any excess. After all, you want a perfect flush, not a huge dab of color.

Now, apply and blend with a stiff brush or damp makeup sponge…

For perfect blush application every time, simply look into the mirror and smile. The parts of your cheeks that pop up when you smile are the apples of your cheeks and the place to start with your blush.

Simply use a circular motion and swirl the color onto your apples. For peachier hues, you can also sweep back, along cheekbones to sculpt and define.

Now that you know how to perfectly apply your blush in six simple steps, it’s time to have fun. Grab your perfect shade and get glowing!
